Triolet

There are 8 lines, and 2 rhymes. 5 of the 8 lines are repeated. The rhythm scheme for the Triolet is AbaAbaAB (capital letters represent refrains). The triolet is short, sweet, and arguably tighter than a haiku. It has been around since the fifteenth century, badgering the sanity of poets ever since.

The truth is though, that the Triolet isn't hard at all. It can make such sweet little pieces if you get the hang of it and you'll find yourself jotting them down whenever possible.

Example:

White

A Give me a rose
b Painted in white
a When cold wind blows
A Give me a rose
b When nothing grows
a And there's no light
A Give me a rose
B Painted in white.

I Hear Your Voice

A Though it's been long
b I hear your voice
a I hear your song
A Though it's been long
b 'Twas never wrong
a It was your choice
A Though it's been long
B I hear your voice

A Though it's been long
b I hear your voice
a Yes all along
A Though it's been long
b And I've been strong
a I can rejoice
A Though it's been long
B I hear your voice
