Welcome Summer
Summer is my
favourite time to write poetry. Bright sunshine, clear skies, spring
sounds, blooming flowers, blossoming trees, and the sweet smells of
newness.
Look at things for the first time. Smell it
Take the initiative this month and get yourself and your poetry to the
people. Think in the box, out of the box and pick at least three things
to do that achieves that goal.
If you're a CFP member, send me your news. That's one done
already. If applicable, it can appear in this newsletter.
Are you a CFP member and write articles? Send them in too. They
can be considered for this newsletter as well. That is free publicity
and promotion whether you are a poet, editor or publicist.

AL PURDY GETS HONOURED
Any time a poet gets recognition,
I am thrilled. In an industry where we are often not heard - yet
have the most to say, Al Purdy was a poet that managed to locate
his target market, and because of this had a following and
respected popularity.
Al Purdy had already received 2 governor general awards for his
over 33 poetry publications, along with the Order of Canada and
Order of Ontario. If there was a next step that would certainly
get noticed, and allow the common man to ponder his place in
society, it would be a statue.
It was unveiled at Toronto Queen's Park, a few steps from the
Ontario legislature and is a life-sized replica. The project was
spearheaded by poetry advocates Scott Griffin (of the Griffin
Poetry prize) and Dennis Lee, and after seven years of
bureaucracy, finally succeeded.
Dennis Lee was quoted as saying "Al Purdy is one of the titans;
if we have a national poet in English Canada, he is it. The
Purdy statue is a tremendous way to celebrate his place in our
lives."
If you had a chance to catch it, there was also a made for
TV movie on CBC celebrating his life. Gordon Pinsent played Al
Purdy.
When events such as this occur, it
reminds me how important what we do to preserve poetry, and that
perhaps non in our lifetime do we get recognized to the fullest
extent, but what we do impacts others. That is why it is
important to always write what you need to say, and then do what
you can to get it out there.
